چکیده

Abstract Background California in the year 2020 experienced a record breaking number of large fires. Here, we place this and other recent years historical context by examining records fire events state back to 1860. Since drought is commonly associated with events, investigated relationship droughts over 160 period. Evidence, exaggeration, and error in historical accounts of chaparral wildfires in California.

For more than half a century, ecologists and historians have been integrating the contemporary study of ecosystems with data gathered from historical sources to evaluate change over broad temporal and spatial scales. This approach is especially useful where ecosystems were altered before formal study as a result of natural resources management, land development, environmental pollution, and cli...

Statistical Analysis of Large Wildfires

Large, infrequent wildfires cause dramatic ecological and economic impacts. Consequently, they deserve special attention and analysis. The economic significance of large fires is indicated by the fact that approximately 94 percent of fire suppression costs on U.S. Forest Service land during the period 19802002 resulted from a mere 1.4 percent of the fires (Strategic Issues Panel on Fire Suppres...

Fire Effects on Historical Wildfire Refugia in Contemporary Wildfires

Wildfire refugia are forest patches that are minimally-impacted by fire and provide critical habitats for fire-sensitive species and seed sources for post-fire forest regeneration. Wildfire refugia are relatively understudied, particularly concerning the impacts of subsequent fires on existing refugia. We opportunistically re-visited 122 sites classified in 1994 for a prior fire refugia study, ...

Quantification of pollutants emitted from very large wildland fires in Southern California, USA

This study investigates the efficacy of the first order fire effects model (FOFEM) implemented in a geographic information system for wildland fire emissions estimation. The objective of the study was to quantify the source and composition of smoke and emissions from wildland fires that burned 235,267 ha in Southern California, USA, in October 2003. From inputs of vegetation, fuel model data, w...

California Wildfires of 2008: Coarse and Fine Particulate Matter Toxicity

BACKGROUND During the last week of June 2008, central and northern California experienced thousands of forest and brush fires, giving rise to a week of severe fire-related particulate air pollution throughout the region. California experienced PM(10-2.5) (particulate matter with mass median aerodynamic diameter > 2.5 mum to < 10 mum; coarse ) and PM(2.5) (particulate matter with mass median aer...
